Mexico’s Early Warning Systems Gets Tested By a 7.2 Magnitude Quake

Less than 10 seconds after a magnitude 7.2 quake was detected in central and southern Mexico on April 18th, 2014, the Seismic Alert System of Mexico (SASMEX) successfully notified officials in seven Mexican cities making it one of the world's most effective earthquake early warning systems.

Beginning in 1990, SASMEX has evolved into a sophisticated configurable system that can issue notifications simultaneously through siren, AM and FM radio, opt-in text message service, and television broadcast to regions that will be affected by a detected earthquake. Read more about how this recent success of SASMEX is giving hope to other locations hoping to institute a more sophisticated early warning system.
